How I Invented the Air Brake - by George Westinghouse

In 1910, George Westinghouse was elected President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

In his inaugural address to the society, Westinghouse related how he invented the railroad air brake and developed it during the decades that followed.

Over four issues during the summer of 1911, Scientific American Magazine published the speech he gave. Below, in his own words, Westinghouse chronicles how he invented the air brake.
